We were originally going to talk about what makes a successful WooCommerce store, but then we realized that although WooCommerce has a lot of built-in features and extensions that let you create the kind of store you really need, some of the secrets to having a successful ecommerce store have nothing to do with technology: they’re equally true whether you build your store with WordPress, Magento, Shopify, or anything else. In Episode 111 of the WP-Tonic podcast, Scott Buscemi, Morten Rand-Hendriksen, John Locke and I talk about what those things are.
Two examples from my own experience that I share in this episode are a WooCommerce site that the owner had clearly put some money into, but which got almost no traffic and used very few keywords in her product descriptions. Combined with an extremely small email marketing list, this resulted in abysmal sales. In another instance, a print advertising campaign brought disappointing results because it sent people to a page without a buy button.
