Some years ago, Jon Leland and I co-wrote an article called “But I Thought WordPress Was Supposed to Be Easy!” I followed up on that with “Have We Been Misleading People about WordPress?” and then a presentation at WordCamp Sacramento.
The basic idea behind all of these posts is that although WordPress is much easier than what developers had to work with before content management systems came on the scene, it can still be confusing to ordinary people, who quite legitimately expect everything to work like Microsoft Word.
In my talk I mention Squarespace as one of the website-building tools that is set up to be more user-friendly than WordPress. It turns out, however, that despite the slick interface, it’s not as easy to build an amazing website in Squarespace as their marketing copy makes it out to be.
Could it be that this problem of over-promising amazing results for almost no effort is universal in the world of web tools?
